October 18 is World Menopause Day, an opportunity to raise awareness about menopause and the importance of supporting employees experiencing this natural stage of life.
This year’s theme, Chronic Pain in Midlife, highlights an often-overlooked aspect of the menopause transition and its impact on health and well-being.
According to the Menopause Foundation of Canada, unmanaged menopause symptoms cost Canadian employers an estimated $237 million annually in lost productivity. One in three working women report that symptoms affect their performance, yet 70 per cent say they would not feel comfortable discussing menopause with human resources.
In Canada, approximately two million women are between the ages of 45 and 55, when most experience menopause. Its effects can extend into the workplace, with symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and chronic pain affecting employees’ day-to-day experiences.
How employers can support employees
Creating a menopause-inclusive workplace doesn’t have to be complicated. Employers can take practical steps to support employee well-being and create a more open, understanding work environment.
- Start the conversation: Help reduce stigma by encouraging open, respectful discussions about menopause and workplace health.
- Offer flexibility: Consider flexible schedules, breaks, or workplace adjustments to help employees manage symptoms.
- Review employee benefits: Explore whether existing health benefits provide appropriate coverage for menopause-related care and treatment.
- Update workplace policies: Consider incorporating menopause into workplace health, wellness, and accommodation policies.
Supporting employees through menopause can help foster a healthier, more inclusive workplace while contributing to employee retention and productivity.
