Business Excellence Awards

20th Annual North Vancouver Chamber Business Excellence Awards

The Chamber is thrilled to celebrate 20 years of business excellence! Take the opportunity to share with us a successful North Vancouver business or business person and help us honour those who make North Vancouver an amazing place to work and play.

Nominate or Self-Nominate

Recognize and show support for your favourite North Vancouver business.  Please provide a brief description about why the business deserves to be nominated in a specific category.

We notify the business and ask them to complete a Nominee Submission Form.

No one knows their business better than you do.  Share your success story and shine a spotlight on your business. After self-nominating your business, you will be asked to complete a Nominee Submission Form.

Nomination forms may be downloaded here or you may pick one up at the Chamber office.

* There is no limit to the number of businesses you may nominate.

Finalists

Finalists will be honoured at the Nominees Reception on September 20, 2017.

You will gain recognition as a top achiever in your sector and will join leading North Vancouver companies as an outstanding member of the business community.  You will also enjoy:

  • Being featured in our multi-media campaign as one of Business Excellence Award finalists.
  • A commemorative certificate for your place of business, as well as a “Business Excellence Awards Finalist” badge to place on your website and use in marketing materials.
  • A short film profile produced for the Chamber and shown at the Business Excellence Awards Gala (November 2, 2017).
  • Opportunity to place a link on your website to the Chamber’s YouTube Channel, where films are accessible to finalists, winners and the general public after the Business Excellence Awards Gala.
  • Recognition at the annual Business Excellence Awards Gala, attended by 300+ local businesses and community leaders.
  • One complimentary ticket to the Business Excellence Awards Gala ($130 value).
  • Priority ticket purchase for additional guests for the Business Excellence Awards Gala.
Winners

Winners of the North Vancouver Chamber’s Business Excellence Awards will:

  • Receive an engraved award at the Business Excellence Awards Ceremony, and have a maximum of two minutes to speak upon receiving their award.
  • Be featured in our multi-media campaign as a Business Excellence Award winner.
  • Receive a “Business Excellence Winner” badge to place on their website and be used in marketing materials.
  • Opportunity to place a link on their website to the Chamber’s YouTube Channel, where films are accessible to finalists and the general public after the Awards Gala.
Process

June 30, 2017:             Nomination Deadline

July 3-7, 2017:             Nominee Submission Form sent to all nominees.

July 28, 2017:              Deadline for Nominee Submission Form, copy of the business license and a letter of good financial standing (from the accountant or financial institution).

August 2017:               Nominee Submission Forms reviewed by the Judging Committee.

September 20, 2017:  Nominees Reception. All nominees are invited to attend the announcement of the 18 finalists (3 finalists in each category).

October 2017:             Making of the short films. The Chamber partners with Capilano University Motion Picture Arts Program whose 2nd year students produce a brief film of each of the 18 finalists for the Chamber.  The finalists will meet their film team at the Nominees Reception.  The student film teams will come to the finalist’s place of business to record footage for the short films.  It is imperative that the primary contact person for each nominee be available during this time.  This short film is part of the student’s curriculum and they are graded on the process.  Films are property of the Chamber and will be available via the Chamber’s YouTube Channel after the Business Excellence Awards Gala.

October 2017:             Meet with the Judges. The Judging Committee will meet with each of the finalists to conduct an interview.  It is imperative that the primary contact person for each nominee be available during this time.

November 2, 2017:     Business Excellence Awards Gala – Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier

FAQs

Can businesses or individuals nominate themselves?
• Yes, self-nominations are welcome.

How long does a business have to be operating to self-nominate or be nominated?
• Minimum of 18 months in the City or District of North Vancouver.

Can West Vancouver companies be nominated?
• No, all nominees must be operating in the City or District of North Vancouver.

Do I need to have a business license to qualify?
•Yes, you need to have proof of a valid business license from the City or District of North Vancouver.

How are the finalists and winners decided?
• Finalists and winners are decided by the independent Judging Committee, not by an online voting system or by number of nominations.

Can a business or individual self-nominate or be nominated in more than one category?
• Yes, you may self-nominate or be nominated in up to three categories, but can only qualify as a finalist in one category.

Can not-for-profit organizations be nominated?
• Yes, they are accepted as nominees in the Community Contribution category in odd numbered years, i.e. 2017, 2019, 2021…

When are businesses eligible for the Community Contribution category?
• Businesses are accepted as nominees in even numbered years, i.e. 2016, 2018, 2020…

When did the Chamber update the Community Contribution Category so that it alternates between businesses and not-for-profit organizations?
• 2016.

What is the age for a Young Entrepreneur to be considered?
• Under the age of 40 before December 31 of the year considered.

How many consecutive years can you self-nominate or be nominated?
• Unlimited, however, once you win in a given category you may only self-nominate or be nominated again after 7 years.

How many years after winning in one category can you self-nominate or be nominated in the same category?
• After 7 years.

If you win in one category, can you self-nominate or be nominated in a different category the following year?
• Yes.

How many consecutive years can you be nominated in the same category?
• Unlimited until you win.

Can franchises of large companies qualify?
• Yes, if the franchise is privately owned and is operating in the City or District of North Vancouver.

Can sponsors be nominated in a category other than the one they are sponsoring?
• No, sponsors may not self-nominate or be nominated in any category.

Can sponsors make nominations?
• Yes.

Can Board Member’s companies be nominated?
• Yes, as the independent Judging Committee is not comprised of Chamber staff or Board Members.

 

Categories & Criteria

Eligibilty

In order to be eligible for a nomination in any of the categories you must:

  • Have been in business for a minimum of 18 months in the City or District of North Vancouver.
  • Possess proof of a valid business license.
  • Demonstrate a proven sales record.

Anyone is able to nominate a business or business person, and nominees do not have to be a Chamber member.  For additional information please view our FAQ.

Community Contribution Award

The Community Contribution Award will be presented to a North Vancouver not-for-profit organization to recognize their significant contribution and commitment to the community, demonstrated by:

  • Proven track record of actively contributing to and supporting the community through programs, services and/or outreach;
  • Established programs and/or services within the community that encompass vision, integrity and community responsibility;
  • Innovation, growth, and development of programs and services that meet the changing needs of our community;
  • Outstanding leadership, commitment, training and volunteer engagement within the organization;
  • Deep commitment to making North Vancouver a better place to live and play.

* The Community Contribution Award alternates annually between businesses and not-for-profit organizations.

Innovation Award

The Innovation Award will be presented to a North Vancouver business to recognize development and growth through the creation or use of unique technology, products, methods or service, demonstrated by:

  • Use of science and/or technology to create a business that is original or unique;
  • Creation of new or existing processes, products or services that enhance their business and/or customer experience;
  • High degree of originality, creativity and/or experimentation to design and realize the innovation;
  • Commercialization or quantifiable growth within new and/or prevailing markets;
  • Extends community support above and beyond their business or professional responsibilities.
Service Excellence Award

The Service Excellence Award will be presented to a North Vancouver business to recognize their outstanding dedication and achievement to service excellence and customer/guest satisfaction, demonstrated by:

  • Commitment to exceptional service standards that consistently exceed customer/guest expectations;
  • Proficiency in meeting or exceeding the changing needs of customers/guests;
  • Preservation of high service standards through effective staff/team training and development;
  • An exceptional “wow factor” when dealing with customers/guests, partners and stakeholders;
  • Extends community support above and beyond their business or professional responsibilities.

 

Young Entrepreneur Award

The Young Entrepreneur Award will be presented to a North Vancouver business person, under 40 years of age *, who excels in business, exemplifies leadership and exhibits strong entrepreneurial skills, demonstrated by:

  • Exceptional initiative to assume the risk of establishing a new business;
  • Utilization of business skills necessary for long-term success;
  • Progressive growth within new and/or prevailing markets;
  • Dedication and commitment to our community through their interest in leadership, peer mentoring and personal achievement;
  • Extends community support above and beyond their business or professional responsibilities.

Business Person of the Year Award

The Business Person of the Year Award will be presented to an exceptional North Vancouver business person who exemplifies leadership, business excellence and a deep commitment to the community, demonstrated by:

  • High standard of business excellence within their trade or industry;
  • Milestones and accomplishments that demonstrate their effectiveness in business;
  • Elevated level of business operations that encompass vision, integrity and civic responsibility;
  • Growth, development and leadership standards which provide a role model for others to emulate;
  • Established employment leadership standards for staff diversity, development and retention;
  • Recognized role as a strong corporate citizen through active involvement in civic organizations.
Business of the Year Award

The Business of the Year Award will be presented to a North Vancouver business that exemplifies consistent and exceptional achievement from an overall operating perspective, demonstrated by:

  • Proven track record of business sustainability, growth, and sound financial management;
  • Differentiated customer service, product and value proposition;
  • Established employment leadership standards for staff diversity, development and retention;
  • Elevated level of business operations that encompass vision, integrity and civic responsibility;
  • Proven milestones, achievements and/or notable recognition in their field of business;
  • Recognized role as a strong corporate partner through active involvement in civic organizations.
