NEWS RELEASE
North Shore Mayors and Chambers of Commerce seek
innovative local businesses to become Climate Smart

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, April 1, 2010
VANCOUVER—Mayors and business leaders on the North Shore are launching an initiative that will provide support to local businesses to improve their financial bottom line by cutting their greenhouse gas emissions. Up to twenty businesses will be the first to participate in the pilot program that seeks to cultivate business leadership and innovation around climate change.

The District of West Vancouver, District of North Vancouver, City of North Vancouver and the two local Chambers of Commerce are partnering with Climate Smart to deliver the pilot program. The Vancouver-based social enterprise is a world leader in providing training, support and online software to help small- and medium-sized enterprises reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The program will cost only $500 per company thanks to the financial support of local governments. That represents a 66-percent savings on the regular $1,500 rate. Businesses will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“The City of North Vancouver has made climate action a priority, successfully implementing several significant initiatives, with many more underway. Climate Smart is an ideal fit for the City,” says City of North Vancouver’s Mayor Darrell Mussatto. “The City is proud to partner with Climate Smart as it reaches out to local businesses through important climate change education and tools tailored specifically to this influential sector.”

“North Vancouver District is working on policies and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to create an energy-efficient community as part of our current Official Community Plan process,” says North Vancouver District Mayor Richard Walton. “The Climate Smart initiative will provide an excellent opportunity and incentive for our business community to take part in that process.”

“After the recent successful launch of programs to assist local home owners,” says Acting Mayor and Councillor Michael Evison of the District of West Vancouver, “I am pleased to support businesses which will now have the opportunity to participate in this
pilot program. The combined effect again demonstrates that the three North Shore municipalities continue to lead by example.”

On Thursday, April 8, 2010, businesses are invited to attend an evening reception and program launch with North Shore mayors, councillors and journalists at the Park Royal branch of the North Shore Credit Union from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The North and West Vancouver Chambers of Commerce and North Shore Credit Union will co-host this “Business After Five - Climate Smart Information and Networking Session” which will
feature wine, appetizers and a presentation on the Climate Smart program. Interested businesses may register for this complimentary event through the Chambers’ websites at www.nvchamber.ca or www.westvanchamber.com.

"This Climate Smart program provides an incredible opportunity for businesses to reduce the impact on the environment and also reduce their costs, and we're pleased to be working with West Vancouver and the WV Chamber to make this a truly North Shore initiative, and benefit the entire community." says North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce President Anne McMullin.

In April, Climate Smart will begin a series of three training sessions for North Shore businesses that will take them through the steps of measuring and reducing their carbon footprints, while cutting their energy and material costs. The training sessions will run each day from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on April 22, June 3 and June 23 at the North Shore Emergency Management Office.

The North Shore initiative is part of a larger partnership with Metro Vancouver and seven of its constituent municipalities to take 120 businesses through the Climate Smart program, which is designed to train key staff and provide businesses with the tools to become competitive in an era of carbon regulation and volatile energy prices. For its part, the local governments will receive GHG data on local business sectors that feeds
directly into their community-wide emissions inventories and reduction targets. Other partners in this regional effort include the City of Vancouver, Township of Langley, Corporation of Delta and City of Surrey.

To date, Climate Smart has helped more than 100 companies and organizations track over 75,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (equal to the annual emissions of almost 15,000 passenger vehicles) using its online GHG management tool. Another 53 companies are currently in the process of setting their GHG emissions baselines.

“The small business sector can be a driving force for innovative action on climate change,” says Climate Smart President Elizabeth Sheehan. "We're excited to team up with the North Shore municipalities and Chambers of Commerce to support enterprises taking leadership on climate change and harness the entrepreneurial spirit of the business community.”

About Climate Smart
Climate Smart is a Vancouver-based social enterprise launched by Ecotrust Canada in 2009. It is the leading provider of carbon tracking tools, training and technical support to small- and medium-sized enterprises. Its online greenhouse gas management tool for SMEs was rated No. 1 in North America by Carbonzero. It was also a finalist for the 2010 GLOBE Award for Excellence in Emerging Technologies.

'Buy American' agreement is a positive step forward

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, February 5, 2010:  The BC Chamber of Commerce commends the governments of Canada and the United States on reaching a productive and forward-looking agreement on Buy American provisions.

"This represents an important step towards continued engagement with our largest trading partner," said John Winter, President and CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce.

The agreement puts Canadian and BC companies in a better position to benefit from remaining U.S. infrastructure stimulus funding, and establishes a mechanism for negotiating further access to U.S. markets.

"While more work needs to be done to counter protectionism in the United States, this agreement places us in a stronger position than our competitors to receive U.S. stimulus funding," added Mr. Winter.  "This is also the result of greater co-operation between provinces, territories and the federal government - a long-awaited, but very welcome accomplishment.  The depth of the joint federal-provincial offer, and the speed at which it was put forth, is an important precedent which puts us in a good position for negotiating future agreements."

"We must continue to work with the United States to strengthen our ties and to develop solutions that are beneficial to both parties," concluded Winter.

North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce reacts to Provincial Government's decision to not fund the National Maritime Centre

The North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce is very disappointed to learn that the Provincial Government is unable to provide the City of North Vancouver with the funding necessary to develop the National Maritime Centre for the Pacific and the Arctic.  The City was informed by Minister of Tourism and the Arts, Mr. Kevin Krueger in a letter dated January 11, 2010.

"We are disheartened with this decision. We believe the National Maritime Centre would be a place to foster economic growth, training and a better understanding of BC's role in Maritime history," said Christopher Doll, Chair of the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce.  "The Port of Vancouver is Canada's largest and busiest port and is vital to the economy and our community. It is crucial the West Coast have a venue that acknowledges and celebrates our maritime history and opportunities," added Doll.

The North Vancouver Chamber also believes such a centre would open up public access to the waterfront, provide open space for recreation and celebration, and create environmentally and economically sustainable job opportunities.  It was designed to be a national landmark that would have drawn tourism, retail, and other business opportunities.

In 2008, the Province of BC contributed $9 million in start up funds to the City of North Vancouver for the National Maritime Centre, and had announced in its throne speeches of 2008 and 2009 that it would contribute further funds subject to federal matching dollars.  However, the Province wrote that under the current economic conditions, it is unable provide further funding.  Funding for the project was to be a three-way partnership of local, provincial and federal resources, as well as private sector funding.  The Federal government had made a commitment to the project pending a matching investment from the Province.

The City of North Vancouver said in a press release today that while disappointed with the announcement from the Province, it will spend the next few weeks reviewing options and next steps.  The North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce will continue to support the development of the site for economic growth and looks forward to working with the City of North Vancouver on the next steps.

$225 Million invested in five infrastructure projects on the North Shore

The North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce applauds the partnership between the governments of Canada and the Province of BC, Port Metro Vancouver, Translink, our local municipalities, and the private sector for the commitment to invest $225 million in five infrastructure improvement projects on the North Shore. These projects will enhance rail and port operations and accommodate growth in rail and road traffic while contributing to quality of life and environmental benefits.

The five infrastructure projects include:
  1. Brooksbank Avenue Underpass (approx. $25.5 million)
  2. Neptune/Cargill Grade Separation (approx. $48.3 million)
  3. Low Level Road Re-Alignment (approx. $59.2 million)
  4. Pemberton Avenue Grade Separation (approx. $42.7 million)
  5. Western Lower Level Route Extension to Marine Drive ($50 million committed, approx. $86.8 million project cost)

The North Shore Economic Summit
was organized by the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce in January of this year in response to Premier Gordon Campbell’s announcement of 10 measures to improve the province’s economic competitiveness and reduce costs for families and business during the anticipated global economic downturn.

“The North Shore Economic Summit was our response to the Premier’s call for action”, said Mike Watson, co-chair of the Summit. “This is a great example where the North Shore community came together and with one voice presented infrastructure projects to senior levels of government with a recommendation for financial support,” added Watson.

The worldwide financial decline has lead to a deterioration of the Canadian economy felt in many sectors of our North Shore community. “Senior levels of government and the private sector have sought to mitigate this negative impact by investing in projects that will set the North Shore up to be very competitive post recession” stated Naomi Yamamoto, President of the North Vancouver Chamber. “The business communities of North and West Vancouver applaud these initiatives,” she added.
“Special thanks to our North Shore MLAs Katherine Whittred, Joan McIntyre, Ralph Sultan and Daniel Jarvis who never lost sight of the opportunities of our North Shore ports. They worked with senior levels of government to bring these recommendations to reality,” said Wayne Hunter, North Shore Economic Summit co-chair.

North Shore Leaders Align To Support Projects To Jumpstart Our Economy And Put People Back To Work

The worldwide financial decline has lead to a deterioration of the Canadian economy felt in many sectors of our North Shore community. Senior levels of government have sought to mitigate this negative impact by implementing a series of stimulus packages. The business communities of North and West Vancouver applaud these initiatives. On January 30th, the North Shore Economic Summit brought together local business and public sector leaders to develop a consensus on the strategic allocation of the recently announced capital infrastructure funds from the Federal and Provincial governments.

Guided by a process led by the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce this group of senior executives from the business sector, together with leaders from education, health care and First Nations from across the North Shore had one ultimate purpose;“To identify three North Shore based infrastructure projects that could be presented to senior levels of government with a recommendation for financial support”

“The group undertook a rigorous process that opened with a situation analysis of the economic downturn on their respective businesses,” stated Mike Watson, Summit Co-Chair and Chair of the North Shore Business Council. “They established criteria against which several infrastructure projects were evaluated, from which the top three were selected,” he continued. Prior public input and advise from Summit participants figured prominently in the selections.

The group concluded that the following three projects would provide the region and the province with the greatest long-term benefits.

  1. Expand rail accessibility from the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge and along the North Shore’s Low Level Road including road upgrades and buffer zones.
  2. Upgrade the Low level Road access linking North and West Vancouver and the Taylor Way approach to the Lions Gate Bridge.
  3. Invest in a new Film Centre at Capilano University to support and grow our expertise in the film sector.

“Although we believe these projects will have the most significant long-term economic benefits, there were also substantial social and economic benefits identified within the other proposals,” said Naomi Yamamoto, President of the North Vancouver Chamber. “This process should in no way detract from the merits of the other projects considered,” she added.

In October 2008, Premier Gordon Campbell outlined 10 measures to improve the province’s economic competitiveness and reduce costs for families and business during anticipated tough times throughout 2009. Accelerating public investments in capital infrastructure was one of the key actions announced and the North Shore Economic Summit was a response to the Premier's call for action.

The North Shore Credit Union hosted the Summit. Local MLAs including the Hon. Joan McIntyre, Katherine Whittred, Ralph Sultan and Daniel Jarvis along with the three North Shore Mayors attended the briefing session at the conclusion of the Summit.

“We’re now calling on our MLAs and MPs to work with senior levels of government to bring these recommendations to reality,” said Wayne Hunter, Summit planning Co-Chair.
