EPNV Roundtable on Regional Transportation

Economic Partnership North Vancouver (EPNV) recently held a business roundtable with leadership from Translink and the Mayor’s Council to discuss and provide input on the new 10-Year Vision for Metro Vancouver Transit and Transportation.

The roundtable was facilitated by EPNV and provided a platform for local business to articulate their needs to Translink and how it will benefit North Vancouver.  At the table were representatives from many of the sector in North Vancouver, including small business, education, port, and staff from both municipal governments.

“It’s great to see local business leaders, community leaders, and the municipal transportation experts from local governments sit down together in one room to discuss the transit and transportation issues that are so important to the North Vancouver economy,” says EPNV Chief Development Officer Patrick Stafford-Smith, “It’s good to see plans for new investment –  we need smart transportation plans and a commitment from all levels of government to the Phase 2 funding required to keep North Vancouver moving”.

Geoff Cross, VP Strategic Planning & Policy at Translink discussed plans for transit service expansion on the North Shore, goods movement, and regional funding tools including mobility pricing. Specific local investment areas include:

  • An increase in Seabus service – increased frequency and time of day, as well as a plan for a 3rd Seabus
  • Additional B-Line routes moving East/West, as well as north through upper Lonsdale
  • Upgrades to both the  Phibbs Bus Exchange and the Lonsdale Quay Bus Exchange

Critical issues raised during the discussion included the challenge of getting employees to work, the movement of people and goods East/West in North Vancouver, access to Iron Workers Memorial Bridge and congestion on the Cut and along Marine Drive. It was widely agreed that transportation challenges are the biggest impediment to business, and that significant investment is required.
